David Cage on Heavy Rain: ‘Unhappy with everything’

David Cage, founder of developer Quantic Dream and director of Heavy Rain , aired grievances over his ambitious 2010 noir adventure in an interview with Gamasutra: “With the team, we were pretty much unhappy with everything. We thought we could have done a better job in all areas, and have better rendering, and better visuals, and better gameplay, and better everything.” The French composer-turned-game-director goes on to state his disappointment in the game’s technology (despite still being some of the best on the PS3), marketing (despite being an original property that’s hard to fit into a genre), and the game’s balance of storytelling and interactivity.

EU could lose tax breaks for game developers, threatens talent exodus

The European Union provides us a small-scale glimpse into the potential functions of a truly global society — and more recently, a global society in crisis. The unified currency of the EU, the Euro, was on the brink of collapse recently and all of its member countries are still running damage control. Now, France in particular is facing another monetary hurdle, as its tax incentive for game development has expired and casued “genuine concern” the EU may not renew the exception that would reinstate it.

Heavy Rain asks us “How far would you go to save someone you love?” Few games bother with this sort of question because the answer is intensely personal. Most games would rather task you with saving the world than with rocking a baby to sleep or patching up a failed relationship. This intransigence on the part of developers to create idiosyncratic stories that resonate with the individual is holding the medium back.

Some Heavy Rain Move Editions missing advertised content

It’s been happening since April of this year, but hasn’t received much coverage. Some users have been buying the Move Edition of Heavy Rain , which promises four pieces of additional content (the “Taxidermist” chapter, soundtrack, theme and “making of” videos), only to find that what’s advertised on the box isn’t on the disc.  The issue was brought up on the Sony Europe boards months ago , but customers have still been shortchanged in recent weeks
