Attorney: Dead Space 3 resource exploit might be theft

Dead Space 3 features an exploit  which allows players to circumvent the game’s microtransactions by acquiring infinitely spawning items. While Electronic Arts has no intention of removing the feature , an intellectual property expert says the practice exists within a legal grey area and might be considered stealing.  “If you go into a baker’s to buy a bun and they give you the wrong change and you walk away knowing you have been given more change than you handed over in the first place, that’s theft,” solicitor Sara Ludlam told the BBC last week . “So, arguably if you go into this game knowing you are supposed to be paying for these weapons and you notice a glitch allows you to accumulate them without paying, that’s theft as well,” she said

EA: Dead Space 3 microtransaction workaround not a glitch

Electronic Arts claims that the infinite items exploit in Dead Space 3 is “not a glitch” and that the publisher has “no plans to issue a patch to change this aspect of the game.” Responding to a Forbes inquiry , an EA representative stated this was a deliberate move and that they “encourage players to explore the game and discover the areas where resources respawn for free.” The assertion follows a string of bad press regarding the publisher’s decision to integrate a free-to-play model into their full retail product. Whether or not this is in fact a glitch, EA could probably stand to lose a few dollars from players who were unlikely to embrace these  “in-app purchases” anyway.

Dead Space 3 glitch allows infinite resource farming

Dead Space 3 ‘s inclusion of campaign microtransactions incited a negative gut reaction from some potential players, and if we can count on one thing in life, it’s people finding ways around things that make them uncomfortable. A glitch in Dead Space 3 allows players to infinitely farm random items from one room near the end of chapter eight, as discovered and recorded by Game Front . Dead Space 3 allows players to purchase materials for crafting weapons, in both single-player and co-op modes, alongside the standard scavenging and lucky find methods.

Fee-to-Pay, a new name for a hot new business model!

In the wake of Dead Space 3 getting microtransactions , one thing that’s been linger in the minds of gamers is the question of what we call this new and growing business model. Dead Space 3 is one of several retail games adopting a free-to-play model, except it’s not free.  Final Fantasy: All the Bravest is built entirely on the idea of freemium content, but again costs $3.99 to get into before charging you cash at every single term. It’s become clear that “free-to-play” just doesn’t work in games that cost cash, especially now that $60 are having the audacity to do it.

Dead Space 3 crafting system includes microtransactions

Dead Space 3 is going to see a fair few changes, boasting a faster pace, cover-based shooting, and a weapon crafting system. While I’m not a big fan of some of the alterations, the one thing I did find praiseworthy was that latter element — that is, until Visceral revealed the potential reason why it exists. It’s another way to push freemium elements into a non-free game

Firefall beta opens up its item store, sells Founder’s Packages (on sale now)

Red 5 Studios is once again showing off its open world, free-to-play MMO Firefall (currently still in closed beta) at PAX, and the newest bit of content included is a set of in-game stores, allowing players to purchase items and features via microtransaction. Firefall lead designer David Williams promises the developer won’t “sell power items or content areas to players.” Instead, Firefall ‘s item stores are all about aesthetic and convenience items, things that players can use to customize their character’s look, or have some fun in the game world. In addition to the company’s just-announced ‘Founders’ content bundles (detailed above, and currently on sale during PAX), Williams showed us some special cosmetic items available for purchase, like shaggy dreadlocks or a flashy helmet, as well as items from an in-game store called Luau Larry’s

Torchlight art found in iOS MMO; MMO dev denies theft against strong evidence

Art assets from Runic Games’ Torchlight franchise bear more than a passing resemblance to those used in iOS MMO Armed Heroes Online , from Chinese developer Entertainment Game Labs (“EGLS”). And Runic Games head Travis Baldree is calling foul, taking to Twitter this week to say, “So, wow – this game is releasing on the app store. They wholesale stole most of the assets from Torchlight,” and linking to the EGLS game website.
